In the time since the earthquake hit Japan we got overwhelmed by emails (and phone calls) from concerned friends and family. Thank you so much for your thoughts, prayers, and well wishes!

pre-earthquake

On the morning of the big earthquake we went for a play in the park (Rinshi no Mori Koen) near our house. Watch Mayra in ‘her blue house’.

from a proud dad: and then there were four !

In the early hours of Sunday January 30th, Alanna Amelie arrived into this world naturally, comforted by the warmth of the water in birthing pool, assisted by the expertise of our midwife So-san and the courage, strength and immense love that only a mother can muster.

Weighing 3650…

on the phone

Our little chatterbox is talking on the phone these days. It doesn’t necessarily have to be an actual one—anything that looks like a phone and can be held to the ear will do. Whole conversations starting with “moshi moshi” (she must have picked that up while playing at the hoikuen…

ALLOOOO Somolon!!!

Solomon, my brother’s turtle, is staying with us for a month while my brother is in Europe. Mayra (now 1 year 4 months) happily gets to feed him. After one day she settled on calling the turtle “Somolon” and has been talking to, and about him ever since!

mayra 14 months

Hello hello. After a loooong silence here’s a little movie that Mayra and I took with B’s new computer. So much fun playing with the webcam features! Mayra is fascinated by eyes and eyelashes at the moment, and loves playing ‘inai, inai, baa !’ (Japanese for ‘peekaboo!’). She was intrigued…

drill fire

It’s Wednesday morning and here I am, in the cafe waiting until it’s time to pick up Mayra from the hoikuen. A (second) announcement in Japanese followed by one in very-Japanese-sounding English sounds through the speakers: “DRILL FIRE, DRILL FIRE! The drill fire is still burning on the 8th floor…

hoi-ku-en

Yesterday Mayra started hoikuen (daycare). Hibiya Kids Park is where she will be going 2 days a week from October, allowing me to get back to work again (part-time). Or if there is no work out there --the crisis is noticeable in Tokyo as well-- then I have more time…

summer holidays 2009

We were fortunate to be able to go to Holland and escape the summer heat & humidity of Tokyo.
It was the first time for the three of us to travel together, and for Mayra a time to meet some of the family in Holland.

For those of you who didn’t know yet, that’s the full name of our precious girl.
We’re being asked often what the meaning is (of Mayra) and how we choose her names, so here goes an extended entry on the topic.
